Lisa Adriance, PhD

I am a skilled editor with a deep appreciation for language and an interest in the diverse ways people communicate.

Not only do words convey meaning, but the style, flow, and tone of a written document provide the reader with essential information. As an editor and a skilled communicator, I approach my work with a focus on writer intent and reader experience.

While written language is the focus of editorial work, the communication between editor and writer is essential to the success of any writing project. In my work as an editor, I place a high value on communication and building a collaborative working relationship with writers. This approach helps you produce a document that is clear, concise, conveys what is most important to you, and is ready for publication or well on its way.

As a clinical psychologist with more than 30 years of experience working in mental health and social services. I have worked in non-profit, government, healthcare, and academic settings. With this extensive background in psychology, I bring a unique skillset to editing. I am logical, practical, and compassionate which allows me to build strong working relationships with writers and organizations. I can find clarity in chaos, and easily demonstrate my ability to navigate divergent perspectives. With these skills, I can help you find your voice, organize your ideas, and amplify your writing. Whether I am editing an academic article, a grant proposal, or a memoir, I find the underlying humanity in a project and bring personal story to life as a way to engage and energize the reader.  I offer expertise in editing and writing content addressing psychological, medical, public health, social, and academic topics.

I completed the certificate in editing program at the University of Washington, and coursework in grant writing and grant management. Related classes and trainings through various professional organizations allow me to keep learning and stay inspired. I have an undergraduate degree in English and Psychology, and graduate degrees in Educational and Clinical Psychology.

Testimonials

  • Beverly Thorn, PhD
I hired Lisa to serve as my developmental editor, and then line editor on a book [Before I Lose My Own Mind: Dementia Caregiver Survival, In press, Girl Friday Books] that I had finished but had not yet shopped to publishers. I am certain that Lisa's expertise led me to get a contract soon after! Lisa was very reasonably priced (and did not "pad" her services with things I didn't ask for), she was supportive and professional and was accessible throughout the process. My next project will be going to Lisa!
  • -	Monica Oxford, Research Professor
Lisa was wonderful to work with on a revision of a nine-chapter book/manual on perinatal mental health. Lisa demonstrated excellent communication, coordination, and timeliness in managing this massive editorial project. I greatly appreciated her edits. She added suggestions to provide more depth and explanation when needed, addressed issues of voice consistency throughout, and provided insight from a reader's perspective as well as superb copyediting. We will definitely be securing her services for future projects.
